SPN and Ignite Seattle… a Meetup mashup!

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Bre Pettis at Ignite SeattleOnce again this month, the Seattle Podcasters’ Meetup ventures out of the friendly confines of Pyramid Alehouse and into the friendly confines of the CHAC, the Capitol Hill Arts Center. We’re taking the opportunity to attend one of the coolest new events in Seattle, and we’re giving our members a chance to get hands-on with the podcasting gear, and up close and personal with the local Geekerati.

Ignite Seattle is a series of geek events hosted by O’Reilly Radar‘s Brady Forrest and Make magazine‘s Bre Pettis (a Seattle Podcasting Meetup-er). The premiere Ignite event back in December was a blast. Over 200 people packed into the lower level of CHAC to build popsicle-stick bridges and watch a PowerPoint presentation format called Ask Later. Now, if the idea of watching a PowerPoint slide show doesn’t excite you, consider that each speaker has only 5 minutes to present 20 slides, and the slides are automatically timed to advance every 15 seconds. 24 different speakers will present their ideas over the course of an evening, so you’re sure to find one or two topics that will really catch your attention. (Check out the video archives from the first Ignite Seattle here.)

For those of you who’ve been thinking about trying out podcasting — as well as those of you with established podcasts who want a chance to create a podcast that wouldn’t be appropriate for your regular site — we invite you to come out and help contribute to SPN’s “podcast coverage” of what is sure to be a terrific event. Bring your own audio gear or borrow some of ours and conduct roving interviews onsite — to be edited and posted to the SPN podcast and blog later in the week. There is no experience necessary and this will be a great way to get your feet wet in podcasting.

Click on over to our meetup page and RSVP. Hope to see you there!

Podcast with me at a couple of events?

Friday, May 26th, 2006

We have a couple of events coming up in Seattle that should be fun.

The first is the TechCrunch Seattle Web 2.0 party, to be held at Consolidated Works (corner Republican and Boren), this Wednesday, May 31, from 6:30pm to 11pm. The good news is that it’s FREE… sponsored by local developer Redfin. Free beer, baby!

Whadaya say we bring some gear there like my newfangled M-Audio Microtrack, and do some podcasting from the party, to promote the group in the local Web 2.0 scene? Anyone interested in walking around and interviewing folks with me?

Second is Gnomedex, June 29-July 1 at the Bell Harbor Conference Center on Pier 66. I’m wondering if there’s some way to promote SPN at this event…any ideas?

The marketer in me feels like we should take advantage of these local events to boost our visibility, attract more folks, show our Seattle podcasting savvy and maybe get more listeners. Whadaya think?

I’ll be at both events. Anyone else attending? Please comment here.

May ’06 Seattle Podcaster Meetup – Mix’d Rane

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

The May Meetup of Seattle Podcasters rocked the Pyramid Alehouse in Seattle last night. A lot of the usuals showed up, as well as quite a few newbies. It was great to hear about everyone’s new adventures in podcasting, and to share a bit of knowledge here and there.

Special thanks to Dean Standing of Rane Corporation for demonstrating Rane’s MP 4 Mixer and Scratch Live Digital DJ software. Dean stayed around to listen and learn more about podcasting, and we hope some of what he absorbed will be useful back at Rane HQ.

Audio from the event is available on the SPN Podcast feed.

April ’06 SPN Meetup – Your Podcast is Calling

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

Thanks to all who came out to the April Meetup at Pyramid Alehouse in Seattle. As usual, a lot of great information was shared and it’s amazing to think about all the exciting podcasts, technologies and services coming out of Seattle. Thanks to Rob Greenlee for spending some time discussing Melodeo’s Mobilcast and for answering many of the great questions put forth by the group. Mobilcast appears to be another great way for podcasters to deliver content to their audiences. Click here to listen to the Podcast or subscribe to the SPN Podcast feed.

Seattle Mind Camp – April 29, 2006

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Mindcamp-Sm
This isn’t really podcast-related, but I wanted everyone to know that registration has opened for Seattle Mind Camp 2.0, the second semi-annual geek “unconference.” [Disclosure: I'm on the planning committee.]

Seattle Mind Camp is an opportunity for some of this city’s smartest forward-thinkers to get together for a 24-hour, self-structuring, multi-track confab. SMC2 will take place from noon to noon, April 29th through the 30th at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle.

Registrations are filling up quickly, so don’t wait too long to sign up. I’d love to see a strong presence from the Seattle Podcasting Network.

Cool way to keep up with the Seattle concert scene

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Podbop
So Podbop has hit the scene, and it’s getting a lot of buzz. I’m not a huge music geek, but a service like this might even get me hooked.

Visit the site and type in a city and state. Podbop returns a podcast feed of bands coming to your area, a list of upcoming bands included in the feed, and a list of all upcoming events, courtesy of the Eventful database.

Service for some cities may be a bit thin yet, but Seattle’s database seems pretty well stocked. I’ve got the feed in my reader and will soon be rockin’ out to Cat Power and the Memphis Rhythm Band. (Although I won’t get a preview of the upcoming Eartha Kitt concert. *Sigh.* Maybe one day…)

February Podcasters Meetup

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

Thanks for the excellent turn-out to the January Meetup. We hope you found it useful and and we received a lot of positive feedback. Many of you mentioned that, due to the packed schedule, you didn’t have time to catch up with other podcasters. To ease that a bit, we are going to relax the schedule this month. The folks at VoxPro are going to demo their Podcast Studio product (now in beta) for about fifteen or twenty minutes. We will use the rest of the time to catch up with each other and discuss the latest, greatest podcasting trends and technologies. Of course, I’m sure we’ll have to do a little podcasting while we’re there as well – so shoot me a mail if you have anything you wish to discuss specifically.

We will have another guest speaker lined up for the March Meetup.

Thanks and happy podcasting!
